David Moyes wants West Ham to use Spurs COVID break to their advantage

David Moyes has called for his players to use Tottenham’s disruptions due to COVID-19 to build a significant lead over their local rivals in the Premier League table.

Tottenham’s Premier League clash against Brighton on Sunday has been postponed following an outbreak of the virus at the club.

According to reports, Spurs’ clash against Leicester on December 16 is also in doubt, with many at the North London club only expecting the team to return to action against Liverpool on Sunday, December 19.

The Hammers currently occupy the fourth spot but Antonio Conte’s men are now snapping at their heals as they find themselves just two points behind with a game in hand.

Moyes believes his side can use the change in Tottenham’s schedule to their advantage.

When asked if West Ham can build a sizable lead over the Lilywhites over the coming days, the 58-year-old told The Evening Standard: “I think it does give us a chance to try and do that.

“But also we’ve got to be mindful of the level of competition.

“I think that the Premier League, all games are tough so we go to Burnley and it’s always tough there, and you’re talking about Arsenal as if they are not an excellent team so I think it’s easy to say it – in real life action, they’re really tough games.

“I hope that we can win them and really hammer it home and that we can get ourselves in a really good position.”

Moyes also backed the Premier League’s decision to postpone Tottenham’s clash at the Amex Stadium on Sunday, insisting that the right call was made given the outbreak.

He added: “The Tottenham situation you never know how it works.

“It may somehow benefit them, it may also favour Brighton as they have had quite a few injuries, so they might say this is this is a good opportunity to miss a game.

“I think there are other implications as well, but I agree that more than likely if you’re gonna have that many people with Covid you call the games off.”

All teams would prefer to have points on the board over games in hand. So, the change to Tottenham’s schedule will be a boost to their rivals for the fourth spot.

It could also force Conte to rotate his squad more than he would want to due to the resulting fixture congestion over the next few months.
