David Ornstein predicts Man United could enter transfer race for Spurs and Chelsea target

David Ornstein believes that Manchester United could get involved in the race for rumoured Tottenham target Ivan Toney this summer.

Toney will enter the final year of his contract this June and is expected to part ways with Brentford, with Thomas Frank himself confessing last month that the West London club will listen to offers for their star man (Tipsbladet).

It is unclear where the prolific centre-forward will end up this summer but Tottenham’s chances of landing him appear to have been boosted recently.

This is because a number of outlets, including The Sun, have suggested this month that Arsenal’s interest in the striker has now cooled.

The publication asserted that as things stand, the race for Toney’s signature appears to be a three-way contest between Spurs, Chelsea and West Ham.

Ornstein predicts Man United could enter Toney race

However, Ornstein feels that United cannot be ruled out of the race for the Brentford star as Erik Ten Hag might want another top-class number nine to take the burden off Rasmus Hojlund.

The journalist said on The Athletic’s Ask Ornstein Q&A: “This is purely an opinion and not information but I do wonder about Man Utd. They have long been looking to bolster their front line, [Erik] ten Hag wanted [Harry] Kane and [Rasmus] Hojlund was (despite the price) always seen as a development signing/one for the future.

“Hojlund has done really well but it’s a huge responsibility on the shoulders and strain on the body of a relatively inexperienced 21-year-old.

“With [Anthony] Martial expected to leave and uncertainty around the futures of others, perhaps there is scope to go for a Toney. If they decide to, it may of course come down to whether they are prepared to pay what Brentford want.”

There is no doubt that more clubs will enter the race for Toney ahead of the summer as the chance to sign a centre-forward of his quality for around £50m-£60m will be quite tempting for several sides.

The 27-year-old is one of just a handful of strikers in the world who guarantees 20 goals per season in the Premier League.
