David Ornstein reveals the position Mourinho would like to strengthen in January

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has revealed that Jose Mourinho would like to bring in a defensive midfielder to Tottenham during the January transfer window to serve as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s back up.

Hojbjerg has quickly established himself as one of Tottenham’s most important players since arriving in the summer, with the Dane performing an excellent job sweeping in front of the back four.

Tottenham lack a natural replacement for the former Southampton man in their squad and according to Ornstein it is something Mourinho aims to address.

However, the journalist reveals that Tottenham are unlikely to make any moves in January after the significant investment they made during the summer.

This ties in with a report by Football.London’s Alasdair Gold, who suggested that Spurs need to sell players in order to bring in the funds necessary to make new signings.

Further, Ornstein also claims that Tottenham are unlikely to make another attempt to sign Milan Skriniar next month, having failed to get a deal for the Inter Milan defender over the line during the previous transfer window.

We have been linked with a fair few defensive midfielders recently, with Atalanta’s Marten de Roon being the latest one mooted as a possibility. It looks like that is Jose Mourinho’s priority in January, which is understandable as we will be left in a difficult situation should Hojbjerg pick up an injury, particularly since Mourinho seems wedded to playing a double pivot in front of the back four.
