De Ligt opens up about future

Recent reports indicate that Tottenham are set to have a busy summer with a lot of incomings and outgoings, as the club try to rebuild their squad after two transfer windows of complete inactivity (Daily Mail).

One player who could leave Spurs in the summer is Toby Alderweireld after the club decided to take up the option to extend the 30-year-old’s contract which activated a clause whereby he can leave for an offer of £25 million in the summer (The Guardian).

Spurs could potentially be looking for replacements for the Belgian and Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt has been one player who Tottenham were reported to be interested in the past.

De Ligt, who played a crucial role in Ajax’s heroic run in the Champions League, was reported to be close to a move to Barcelona (Goal.com) with Catalunya Radio claiming that the announcement from the Spanish giants was imminent.

However, now the 19-year-old defender has now told The Express that there is no agreement in place with Barca yet.

The Dutchman said, “I don’t know yet.

“There have been conversations, but there is still no agreement.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Although Spurs were linked with the teenager last summer, it looks like De Ligt will have a lot more suitors this summer after his Champions League performances put him in the limelight.

It is unlikely that Tottenham will be willing to pay the kind of fee it would probably take to secure the Dutch International’s signature. The best case scenario for Spurs would be for Alderweireld to stay in which case the squad is pretty well stocked at center half.
