Defender’s Spurs exit now in major doubt

Toby ALderweireld is set to see his final year of his contract out with Spurs despite interest from Manchester United, according to HLN.

The Belgian defender reportedly wished to switch to the Red Devils throughout the summer transfer window.

However, Jose Mourinho’s side have been unwilling to match the transfer fee of around £60m set by Daniel Levy.

With Manchester United also refusing to include a swap deal for wantaway winger Anthony Martial it is believed a potential deal has stagnated and will not progress in time for the 5pm deadline.

The 29-year-old is therefore likely to see his final year out with Spurs who will then have the option to trigger a £25m release clause at the end of his contract meaning the defender will not leave on a free.

Should Alderweireld stay, Mauricio Pochettino has the potential to revert to a back three of Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez which was prevented from growing through Alderweireld’s injury in November.

Spurs fans, are you happy it looks like Alderweireld is staying or do you wish Levy had cashed in on the 29-year-old?
