Defoe reveals he’s been impressed by Spurs star’s range of passing – Not Kane

Jermain Defoe has claimed he has been impressed by Eric Dier’s range of passing for Tottenham and feels his skillset does not get the recognition it deserves.

Dier has emerged as one of Spurs’ key performers under Antonio Conte and has led the side from the heart of defence.

While the 28-year-old has been sound defensively and aerially dominant, he has also shown a knack for playing out the back, which has included demonstrating a strong array of passing.

And Dier’s ability with the ball has particularly impressed former Spurs and England striker Defoe, who feels the centre-back does has not received the credit he has deserved this season.

He told Sky Sports: “He’s back to his best. He said that he had a ‘difficult time’, but as players, you have to somehow get over it.

“I think the manager coming out and saying ‘he could be one of the best defenders in the world’. I think that does so much to a player.

“His passing range is unbelievable. When I got back into the England squad, he really impressed me with his passing. Technically, he is better than people think.

“He seems more confident again. More lean and it’s all good for Tottenham.”

Dier, who missed a chunk of games at the start of the year, has returned and played a big part in Tottenham’s resurgence in the top four race.

He has featured in all of Spurs’ last eight Premier League matches, which has seen them claim six wins en route to breaking into the top four (Transfermarkt).

Dier has been excellent for the vast majority of the campaign and it is good to see a former player give him the recognition he deserves.

He has been a big reason why Spurs have improved under Conte, and has often provided the side plenty of opportunities going forward with his long passing.
