Dejan Kulusevski names the most ‘annoying’ Premier League defender to play against

Tottenham Hotspur star Dejan Kulusevski has named Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk as the most difficult defender to play against and claims the Dutchman is annoyingly good at what he does.

Kulusevski has been with Tottenham for more than two years now and it would be fair to say he has a good handle on the Premier League and the players he has faced by now.

The Swedish winger has six goals and three assists to his name this season (Transfermarkt), and has been flourishing under Ange Postecoglou as Spurs challenge for a spot in the top four.

He faces brilliant defenders in training every day, with the likes of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, and has come up against some of the very best in the world at international level, too. But who does Kulusevski rate as the most difficult defender to take on?

Who is the most difficult defender Kulusevski has faced?

Speaking to Premier League Productions (18/03/24 at 5:40 pm), Kulusevski was asked that very question, and he had a great reason for picking Liverpool captain, Virgil van Dijk as his greatest adversary.

He said: “Van Dijk. Those fast players. You know when somebody is really fast and can be annoying?”

The evidence speaks for itself, too. Kulusevski has managed just one assist against Liverpool in all his time in the Premier League, so clearly van Dijk knows how to handle the Spurs man.

Spurs Web Opinion

There are few defenders better than Virgil van Dijk in world football, never mind the Premier League. He is the benchmark really, and has been for some years, so it’s easy to understand why Kulusevski hates playing against him. Liverpool are a great team, and that is built on the solid foundations van Dijk gives them at the back.
