Dele insists Tottenham needed just ‘one more thing’ to become title challengers

According to former Tottenham star, Dele, his side could have been genuine challengers for the Premier League title under Mauricio Pochettino if they had made just one more big signing.

Dele took the Premier League by storm when he joined Tottenham in 2015, and went on to bag 67 goals and 59 assists for the Lilywhites in 269 appearances (Transfermarkt).

During his time with the club, Spurs were twice involved in the title race, going closest in the 2016/17 season when they finished second to Chelsea.

The Lilywhites famously also made it to the Champions League final in 2019, but were unable to overcome Liverpool at that point.

Mauricio Pochettino‘s tenure at Spurs ultimately ended up being a fruitless one, with the trophy drought continuing to this day.

Spurs just needed one big signing

So, what was stopping that talented team from bringing home some silverware? Well, according to Dele in his appearance on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football show (15/4/2024 at 6:55pm), Tottenham were desperate to find one more big signing who could take them to the next level.

He said: “We felt as a team, players as and as manager we felt that we were just missing one more thing to really push us into title contenders every year.”

When asked if he was talking about a player or more of a mentality shift, Dele replied: “Maybe a bit of both. We wanted to see the one more player come in who was going to really push us.”

We were so close during this period, and it’s such a shame that we never won anything. I believe if we had won one of those titles, the floodgates would have opened for that squad. But now, we will have to hope the same can happen for the current squad.
