‘Demand the best’ – Pep Guardiola on the challenge of a first league win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has warned his players to be tense ahead of tomorrow’s match against Tottenham Hotspur.

City have historically not enjoyed their trips to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since the venue opened its doors.

Back in January, both sides faced each other in North London in the fourth round of the FA Cup in which Nathan Ake’s late goal was not only their first goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on the sixth time of asking, they also got their first result.

Previously, it had been five defeats out of five and they will now be looking for their first Premier League win at the stadium to keep themselves in the driving seat to retain their crown ahead of Arsenal.

The Gunners are a point ahead of City going into the final weekend of the season, with Guardiola‘s side needing all three points to ensure that their fate is in their own hands when they face West Ham United at the Etihad.

Pep Guardiola wants first Premier League win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

“If you play these games relaxed, it’s a big problem,” Guardiola told the Evening Standard.

“The right tension, and the right, hmm, focus has to be there.

“We need to demand the best. Maybe they are going to play for Champions League qualification and have a huge target for them too.

“We have a huge target at the same time as well.”

Speaking about City’s track record at the stadium, Guardiola stressed the importance of securing their first top flight win there, he added: “Many times it happened we played really good, many, many times, we were not able to score and win the games.

“But to do something in this country never another team has done it, so you have to do something special, exceptional I would say.

“And it hasn’t ever happened in the Premier League, so we have to do it this time.

“So history is in front of us, and we have to accept it.

“We have not done it, it’s the time to do it, otherwise Arsenal will be champions.”
