Dembele misses Newcastle showdown

According to the London Evening Standard we will again be without Mousa Dembele for Wednesday’s must-win match against Newcastle however Jan Vertonghen is fit after turning his ankle against West Brom.

Vertonghen limped off in the final five minutes of defeat but he was able to walk out of the Hawthorns unaided and the 31-year-old has recovered in time to face the Magpies at Wembley.

However the article adds that Dembele remains sidelined with a twisted ankle, despite Mauricio Pochettino’s hopes that he would have recovered from the problem sustained in the win over Watford a week ago.

The article adds that Dembele joins Harry Winks, who is still nursing a long-term ankle problem, and Serge Aurier (hamstring) on the sidelines.Eric Dier also misses out but should return for the visit of Leicester City.

With Vertonghen now vailable the article adds that Toby Alderweireld’s best chance of a swansong in Spurs colours will be if Pochettino sticks with the back-three he used at the Hawthorns with the centre-half expected to leave Spurs in the summer.

The article adds that Pochettino is expected to recall Ben Davies after resting him at the weekend.

We will finish third if we win against Newcastle and Leicester on Sunday but could still slip below Chelsea into fifth, despite boasting a 10-point lead over the Blues four games ago.
