Departed Spurs star admits his family wanted him to return home in January

Bryan Gil has admitted that his family wanted him to return to Spain during the January transfer window.

Tottenham snapped up Gil from Sevilla for £21.3m plus Erik Lamela last summer (Independent) after the winger had an outstanding 2020/21 campaign on loan at Eibar.

However, the 20-year-old’s Spurs career has not begun in the manner he would have hoped for, having failed to make a single Premier League start for the club in the first half of the campaign (Transfermarkt).

It thus did not come as a surprise when the youngster returned to Spain on transfer deadline day, sealing a loan move to Valencia until the end of the season.

According to The Evening Standard, Tottenham are hopeful that Gil could have a bright future in North London, and expect him to return to the club at the end of the campaign.

The Spain international has now admitted he is delighted to have sealed a temporary move to the Mestalla and is excited by the new adventure.

Gil said on completing his move to Valencia (via The Sun): “It is a special day for me. I wanted to be here.

“My family is also very happy. They wanted me to return to Spain and now it’s time to enjoy the team and the city.”

In the few cameos that he has had off the bench over recent months, Gil has shown glimpses of the tremendous quality that he possesses.

I believe Spurs made the right decision by loaning him out as it is important for the 20-year-old to play regularly in order to continue his development.
