Di Marzio names Spurs as one of three ideal destinations for Dutch star

Gianluca Di Marzio has named Tottenham Hotspur as one of three potential destinations for PSV Eindhoven sensation Cody Gakpo.

Gakpo first broke into PSV’s first team as a teenager but the forward’s stock has risen considerably over the last few years, with the 23-year-old now being viewed as one of the brightest attacking talents in Dutch football.

The Dutch international has enjoyed a sensational start to the season, having scored 13 goals and provided 11 assists across all competitions so far (Transfermarkt).

The Daily Mirror (22/03/22 edition – as relayed by The Express) reported back in March that Gakpo was on Tottenham’s radar.

The report added that the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool were also eyeing the youngster but none of those clubs made a move for the forward during the summer transfer window.

However, Di Marzio believes that it is only a matter of time before Premier League clubs come calling for the PSV star.

The journalist told Wettfreunde about Gapko: “I know him very well. He’s a very, very good player.

“When you play in the Eredivisie with PSV and Ajax, you obviously learn intensity and quality, so the Premier League is the right move for players like him. I think Manchester United, Arsenal or Tottenham.

“Tottenham, I think, need other players like him to have a deeper squad and more managerial choices. One of those teams. It depends on what PSV want for him.

“I think Manchester United or Arsenal, or Tottenham, for that matter, are the right projects for a quality and intense player like him.

“Of course, it’s still too early to say if there is a deal or if the clubs are talking to each other. We are in October, and there is also a World Cup, so all transfers will be postponed. Each club will wait until the World Cup and see what happens.”

Unless Bryan Gil makes a dramatic impact in the second half of the season (either at Spurs or out on loan), the North Londoners will be in the market for a forward next summer to replace Lucas Moura. One would expect Gapko to be one of the names on Paratici’s radar.
