‘Didn’t need to’ – Tottenham legend hints club wasted money on three players

Graham Roberts has criticised Tottenham’s recruitment of Ryan Sessegnon, Joe Rodon and Jack Clarke.

The trio, who were bought by Spurs across 2019 and 2020, have struggled to make the desired impact during their time in North London so far.

Sessegnon, 21, the most expensive of the three, has made just 22 appearances (Transfermarkt) for the club since securing a £25 million move from Fulham (BBC Sport) with most of his stint being disrupted by injury.

Clarke was acquired in the same transfer window as Sessegnon following a breakthrough campaign with Leeds, but has spent most of his time with Tottenham’s reserve side.

After heading straight back on loan to the Yorkshire outfit, the winger also had spells with QPR and Stoke with his services now taken to Sunderland for the rest of the campaign.

Meanwhile, Rodon has also faced limited game time and has made just one Premier League appearance this term (Transfermarkt), with Antonio Conte often overlooking the Wales international.

Former Spurs defender Roberts cannot believe his former side signed the aforementioned players, who cost the club around £45 million combined (TransferMarkt).

Roberts told GiveMeSport: “You didn’t need to go out and buy Sessegnon, Rodon and Clarke. You don’t need to.”

All three of them haven’t progressed how the club would have expected them to. Sessegnon probably has the biggest chance of succeeding out of the three having been utilised fairly frequently, while Rodon is a big question mark considering he is now 24 years old. Clarke is still young, but no one knows whether he has what it takes to make it.
