‘Didn’t surprise me’ – Postecoglou comments on Heung-min Son’s mood since Spurs return

Heung-min Son is back at Hotspur Way and is ready to take on Brighton tomorrow, but while that may be good news for Spurs fans, it does mean the player himself had to bow out of the Asian Cup earlier than hoped. Ange Postecoglou has now commented on how Son has reacted to that disappointment.

Spurs have not been able to call upon their captain throughout the entirety of 2024, with Heung-min Son representing South Korea in the Asian Cup.

Unfortunately, try as he might, Son was unable to lead his country to glory in Qatar. South Korea fell at the semi-final stage with a 2-0 defeat to Jordan.

Rather than join his national teammates in a trip back to South Korea to dissect the defeat, Son went straight back to London to join up with Spurs ahead of this weekend’s game against Brighton (Sungmo Lee).

Heung-min Son was keen to get back to Spurs

Speaking to the press today (via Football.London), Ange Postecoglou was asked about the example Son has set by getting straight back into the thick of the action with Spurs this week and making himself available for the weekend.

He said: “It wouldn’t surprise anyone to see him [upset] like that. He was very, very disappointed with Korea’s exit because they haven’t won it for quite a while and after they got past Australia, when you get to the semi-final stage you feel so close.

“Anyone who watched the tournament [knows] he gave everything and didn’t leave anyone questioning his commitment to his country. He was spent by the end of it but I spoke to him not long after and he was keen to come back, get among the boys again. He was keen to come back here.

“It didn’t surprise me that he wanted to train straight away and be available. That’s why he is the person he is.”

I knew this was exactly the way Son would have approached the exit. He’s obviously hurt by it, but the best thing for him is to dive into his Spurs commitments with everything he has and hopefully guide us to success in the final stages of this season.
