‘Difficult to understand’ – Conte comments on Spurs fans’ criticism towards him

Antonio Conte has been speaking to the press (via Football.London) ahead of the midweek clash with Manchester City, and has had his say on the criticism he has been receiving from Tottenham Hotspur fans recently.

Tottenham go into the Manchester City game on Thursday on the back of a disappointing defeat to local rivals Arsenal. The Gunners came away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with all three points after a 2-0 win on Sunday evening.

The result left many fans frustrated, not only in losing to such fierce rivals, but for the nature of the performance on the day, too. It’s a defeat which sees Arsenal go 14 points clear of Spurs now, and puts a huge dent in Tottenham’s hopes of finishing in the top four this season.

With Conte’s contract set to expire in the summer, his future at Tottenham is uncertain. Nobody appears to know whether Conte even wants to stay at Spurs, or if the board are going to back him and continue the project that has been started.

When asked about the way fans have started to turn on him and his team, Conte was keen to reiterate that everyone is doing what they can to turn things around and improve on the pitch.

He said: “What I can say is only one thing. We are working really hard every day for this club. If there is criticism then we have to accept. It’s difficult to understand the criticism because we are doing everything we can in this situation.”

I can totally understand why fans are beginning to lose patience with Conte, as it appears he is not getting the best out of key players at the moment. However, we have to remember he is working with a squad that is not fit for purpose, and we should be urging the board to give him the resources to change that.
