Dimitar Berbatov names former Spurs teammate as his greatest-ever partner

Dimitar Berbatov names Tottenham Hotspur legend Robbie Keane as his ‘favourite strike partner’

Keane joined Tottenham from Leeds United in the summer of 2002, and when he left the club to join Liverpool in 2008, he was well on his way to becoming a Spurs legend.

Keane was at the peak of his powers when he made the switch from White Hart Lane to Anfield in the summer of 2008, with the Irishman having formed a formidable partnership with Dimitar Berbatov over the previous two seasons.

The duo left Spurs at the same time with the Bulgarian moving to Manchester United. His time at Old Trafford was a huge success but Keane, on the other hand, found himself back at Tottenham six months after joining the Reds.

Keane never rediscovered his form back at Spurs and spent a few seasons in Scotland, England and North America before eventually calling it a day after a short spell in India.

The Irish striker later admitted that, in his mind, he was expecting to stay at Liverpool for a long time but a lack of playing time under Rafa Benitez forced him to return to Spurs (Liverpool Official Website).

Berbatov holds Robbie Keane in high regard

Speaking on Prime Video Sport, Dimitar Berbatov has huge praise for Robbie Keane, naming the Spurs legend as his ‘favourite striker partner’.

“It was probably Robbie Keane because we just struck a great partnership together immediately.”

Keane played 306 times for Spurs during his time in North London, scoring 122 goals and providing 32 assists (Transfermarkt). Berbatov and Keane were crucial to Spurs’ last major trophy, the 2008 Carling Cup.

Robbie Keane is still considered a Spurs legend, but he could have grown to great heights, had he not made that ill-fated decision to join Liverpool in 2008. His partnership with Berbatov was a sight for sore eyes.

It is telling that since the Irishman left the club, Spurs are yet to win a major trophy. Ange Postecoglou looks primed to get the monkey off our back and let’s hope it happens this season.
