Former Tottenham striker, Dimitar Berbatov, has urged Spurs fans to be patient with Jose Mourinho and believes that the Portuguese coach can only be judged after his first full season in charge of the team.

Mourinho was appointed as the Tottenham head coach in November, replacing Mauricio Pochettino at the helm after the team made a disappointing start to the season and found themselves languishing in fourteenth in the Premier League.

While results improved immediately after Mourinho’s arrival and Spurs started to climb up the table, the honeymoon period didn’t last for long. After injuries to key players, the team struggled to put together decent performances and pick up consistent results.

Berbatov insists that Spurs made the right choice in going for Mourinho and believes it was a sign of the club’s ambition, although it was sad to see the back of Pochettino.

Speaking to Betfair, the Bulgarian said: “First of all, it was sad to see Mauricio Pochettino get sacked at Spurs.

“It took everyone by surprise, but then, on the other hand, it was a highlight to see the club go for Jose Mourinho and get him. I didn’t expect it and it showed an intention from the club.

“Mourinho came from United and he didn’t have a great end to his time there but he was still winning trophies, which is what Spurs need really bad and that was probably the main reason they went for him.”

He also insisted it was too early to judge the Portuguese coach for the job he’s doing at Spurs: “He’s a proven name and one of the best in the world in the past 15 years.

“It’s still a bit to soon to judge the job he has been doing, or me he needs a full season before we start to judge the job he has done.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I expect us to be a lot better drilled both defensively and offensively once Jose has a pre-season to get his ideas across to the squad. He has admitted himself that he doesn’t have much experience of taking teams over midseason and the injury problems have only added to his woes this campaign.
