Dimitar Berbatov singles out player for praise after PSV win

Tottenham Hotspur battled their way through a tough match at Wembley on Tuesday this week.

The Champions League tie was a must win game for the Lilywhites after taking just one point from their first three games in the competition.

It was far from an ideal start as PSV nodded in the first goal with just a minute on the clock.

The Dutch league leaders then defended for their lives for the next 75 minutes.

It was beginning to look as if it would not be Tottenham or Pochettino’s day when Harry Kane fired them back into contention.

He latched onto a Llorente knock down, driving it into the back of the net with his weaker left boot.

Then, in the dying minutes, captain Kane stepped up again to see his header deflect against two PSV defenders before trundling over the line.

Former Spur Dimitar Berbatov praised Harry’s contribution to the tie, but he wasn’t talking about Kane.

Berba believed that Harry Winks was a standout player for Spurs as he marshalled the midfield masterfully, and often alone.

Berbatov told his Betfair column: “It’s still going to be very difficult for Tottenham to qualify from their Champions League group, but the win over PSV on Tuesday was very important, for confidence and mentality going into the next few weeks.

“I was delighted to see Harry Kane on the scoresheet yet again.

“People have been writing shit about him this season for not scoring in every single game, but he stepped up when it matters.

“Harry Winks was also excellent on the night, which was great to see.

“He’s only 22 but took the responsibility as the only deep midfielder. It shows that you can be experienced even at a young age.

“The win means Tottenham are in good shape to qualify for the Europa League at least and, as I’ve said before, that would be a good competition for them to target.

“They need to win a trophy and it’s a great competition despite what some people say.”
