‘Direct contacts expected next week’ – Fabrizio Romano provides update on Spurs-linked defender

Fabrizio Romano has revealed on Twitter that there is expected to be direct contact between Tottenham Hotspur and Middlesbrough over a deal for Djed Spence next week.

Romano has stated the north Londoners are yet to table an offer for the England Under-21 international.

The Italian journalist previously claimed on Friday that Spurs were fully focused on completing the signing of Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma.

Spence has attracted plenty of admirers after his impressive season on loan with Nottingham Forest, having helped Steve Cooper’s side to secure a return to the Premier League.

Alasdair Gold reported earlier this month during Q&A on Football.London that Spurs, Borrusia Dortmund, AS Roma, Newcastle, Brentford and Forest are all willing to meet Boro’s valuation.

The Northern Echo have also reported that Forest have admitted defeat in their hopes of signing the 21-year-old wing-back on a permanent basis.

Given the interest in Emerson Royal from clubs in Spain and the difficulty the Brazilian has had in adapting to Antonio Conte’s demands as a wing-back, it makes sense to free up a non-homegrown space in the squad and instead bring in Spence to compete with Matt Doherty for the starting position.

Spence is definitely a player for the future and can flourish under the watch of Conte, who expects his wing-backs to be able to have a positive impact in the final third of the pitch.
