Director says no one has made contact about midfielder despite Spurs scout links

Mainz’s director of sport, Christian Heidel, has described the speculation surrounding the future of rumoured Tottenham target, Anton Stach, as a circus.

Stach’s reputation has blossomed since he moved to Mainz back in 2021, with the 24-year-old establishing himself as one of the most consistent players in his position across the Bundesliga and even winning two caps for Germany in 2022.

90 min reported last month that scouts from Tottenham have travelled to the Mewa Arena this season to run the rule over the defensive midfielder.

The publication explained that Spurs were not alone in their interest in Stach, with Liverpool, Newcastle United and West Ham United also said to be monitoring the player’s development.

Fabrizio Romano subsequently told CaughtOffside a couple of weeks ago that the former Wolfsburg man was valued at €18m-20m (£15.9m-£17.7m).

When asked about the speculation over Stanch’s future, Heidel has now told BILD (17/03/23 via Sport Witness): “We haven’t heard anything about the whole circus yet.

“No one has contacted us yet, so the subject doesn’t arise at the moment!”

Mainz’s director of sport also confirmed that the Bundesliga club have the option to extend the midfielder’s contract by one year and that they are seriously considering activating it.

He added: “It (the clause) still has time. But I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t pull it. I’ll say what I always say: For Mainz 05, no player is unsellable.

“In such a case, you have to weigh up the economic aspects against the sporting aspects. It depends on what the player wants. And then you decide.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I have been quite surprised to see Tottenham being linked with so many central midfielders ahead of the summer, given that it is the one area of the pitch where we are fairly well-stocked.

The club’s hierarchy will likely not make any decisions regarding their transfer targets until they finalise a managerial appointment.
