‘Disrespect Foden’ – Some Spurs fans react to Glenn Hoddle’s Dele Alli comparison

Glenn Hoddle has suggested that Tottenham have a ‘major asset’ in Dele Alli and believes he could score more than Mason Mount and Phil Foden if he reaches top form in his preferred position.

Since arriving at the club in the summer, Nuno Espirito Santo has elected to deploy the 25-year-old in a much deeper position in midfield.

He started each of Spurs’ first six games in the Premier League but has since been an unused substitute in the next three, after being hauled off at half-time during last month’s 3-1 defeat to Arsenal in the North London derby.

Instead, Nuno has entrusted the likes of Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as a holding pair, while ditching the three in midfield he preferred to use at the start of the season.

Although all seems bleak currently for the midfielder, Spurs icon Hoddle believes Alli can still be a useful player for the club but only if he is reinstated into his previous role behind the striker.

The former midfielder turned pundit also suggested that Alli could score more than the likes of Manchester City starlet Phil Foden and Chelsea’s Mason Mount if he was utilised in a more attacking position.

Hoddle told The Sun: “Dele is a major asset. Playing at his best, he would score more goals than [Phil] Foden and [Mason] Mount.

“He is a midfielder who gets in the box. He is a box threat, rather than a deeper player who is a builder and you can build your game around.

“His biggest attribute is his ability to get into the box. And when he gets back to doing that, he will show us why he was so highly rated.

“But at the moment, he has lost his goalscoring ability and I don’t think he is playing in a role where he is being told to get into the box.

“When Dele gets into the box, he is a wonderful player. You would want him in any team because goalscoring midfielders are hard to come by… He came back this summer with a really good attitude. He clearly wants to put it right and that’s half the battle.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Alli is enduring another tough stint at Spurs after it appeared that he would be having a regular role in the side. It is probably unlikely that Nuno would slot him into a role behind the striker, given that Tanguy Ndombele is beginning to hit a decent patch of form.
