Djed Spence opens up on his aims while out on loan away from Tottenham

In his first interview after signing for Rennes, Djed Spence remarked that he sees the move as an opportunity to demonstrate what he can do in Ligue 1.

Spence has not started a single game since arriving at Tottenham from Middlesbrough last summer and it did not come as a surprise when the North London club confirmed on deadline day that he was leaving on loan prior to the announcement of Pedro Porro’s arrival.

In response to a question from a fan on social media on why the 22-year-old was not loaned out to a Premier League club, Alasdair Gold explained that the clubs who wanted the right-back were insisting on either an option or an obligation to buy.

Rennes’ executive chairman and general manager Olivier Cloarec expressed his delight at beating out the competition to Spence’s signature while the Ligue 1 club’s technical director Florian Maurice has described the Tottenham man as a player with ‘great potential’. (Football.London).

On completing his switch to Roazhon Park, Spence said in his first interview on Rennes’ official channel: “I’ve never played in the French league so I never know but I guess it may be different so I’ve got to find out for myself.

“Obviously it’s a big club and I think an opportunity to play in Ligue 1 and I think it is a big opportunity for myself, to test myself to see what I can do in this league.”

When asked about the prospect of playing in the Europa League, the defender said: “Yeah I’m looking forward. Every competition is important. I’ve just got to be ready and play well and take my chance.”

When asked about his style of play, the Tottenham man responded: “I’m a very passionate player. I think I’m an exciting player and I like to get the ball and run with the ball and excite the fans, it will be good.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While I was hoping to see Spence play in the Premier League, the 22-year-old is far likelier to get regular starts under his belt at Rennes, which he desperately needs after warming the bench for six months. Hopefully, he returns to Spurs as much more of a finished product in the summer.
