Djed Spence reveals words of encouragement Ivan Perisic gave him at Spurs

Djed Spence has revealed that Ivan Perisic told him to keep training hard and assured him he will get his chance this season.

Spence was the sixth player to arrive through the door at Hotspur Way this summer and he is by far the most inexperienced of the six signings Antonio Conte’s men have made.

The 21-year-old took the Championship by storm on loan at Nottingham Forest last season but it remains to be seen whether he can take that form into the top flight.

Conte admitted last month that the youngster’s name was proposed by the club, but he did give a green light to the deal (The Athletic), which indicates Spence will have to win the Italian over if he is to get regular game time during the upcoming season.

The right-back was one of the few players who did not get any minutes in Tottenham’s pre-season friendly against Roma in Israel on Saturday, and he revealed that Perisic gave him words of encouragement after the game.

The youngster told Football.London: “I spoke to Ivan just then. He told me my chance will come, just be ready, train hard, when you get your chance do well and hopefully, you’ll stay in the team.”

Spence acknowledged that the step up from the Championship to the Premier League is a big one: “They’re just more ruthless [in the Premier League]. It’s just a better level in every way.

“Hopefully, I can take those performances into the Premier League. Do well for the team, do well for me and hopefully we can do good things this season.”

When asked what Spurs fans can expect of him, the former Boro man said: “Hopefully I can bring excitement to the team, bring something different and give the fans something to cheer about.”

One can understand why Conte was keen to bring Perisic through the door. While his qualities as a player are obvious, he also clearly has a winning mentality and is the sort of character who will constantly push his teammates to give their best.
