Djed Spence’s impressive stats in the Championship will excite Spurs fans

Djed Spence’s stats from last season make for extremely promising reading, with the right-back having won more duals and completed more dribbles than any other defender in the Championship in 2021/22.

Spence is expected to be the sixth player to arrive through the door at Tottenham this summer, with the right-back reportedly completing his medical on Friday ahead of sealing his move from Middlesbrough (Fabrizio Romano).

According to reports, Spurs will pay an initial fee of £12.5m for the 21-year-old, with the fee potentially rising to just under £20m including add-ons (Fabrizio Romano).

Spurs fans will certainly be excited about what Spence can offer from the right wing-back role, with Sky Sports now revealing that the youngster sat at the top of the charts for several metrics last season.

The right-back reportedly won 508 duals during his loan spell at Nottingham Forest last season, which is the most of any defender in the division.

The England Under-21 international is said to have attempted more dribbles than any defender in the Championship and completed 76, leading the way again.

Sky Sports also revealed that Spence had 80 touches in the opposition box, the sixth highest in the Championship.

The Boro youngster also won 60 fouls across the 2021/22 campaign, with only three defenders in the division being fouled more often.

These stats clearly seem to suggest that Spence is exceptional in ball progression, in one vs one situations and in making runs into the box. All of those characteristics are vital for a wing-back in Conte’s system and explain why the 21-year-old is the club’s top target for the position.
