‘Do-or-die’ – Postecoglou reveals what he told Spurs players at half-time vs Aston Villa

Tottenham secured an all-important three points as they continue to challenge at the top of the Premier League table, and it’s safe to say Ange Postecoglou is happy with what he saw from his team today.

Going into today’s game, Tottenham trailed fourth-placed Aston Villa by five points. Now, the Lilywhites are just two points behind their opponents, having played one game less than Unai Emery’s side.

We witnessed something of a demolition job at Villa Park, with Spurs coming out in the second half and firing two quickfire goals to take control of the game thanks to James Maddison and Brennan Johnson.

Later, Heung-min Son and Timo Werner converted to double Spurs’ lead and secure a crucial win in the race for Champions League football this season.

Postecoglou praises his players after Villa win

Ange Postecoglou was full of praise for his team after the win, and insists that his side are not done for the season just yet.

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Postecoglou said: “We were outstanding in all facets. First half we made them work really hard. We maintained that tempo with our pressing, and the quality of our football in the second half was outstanding against a very good team.

“It was a big game with plenty of significance so for us to perform like that was a big credit to everyone. I felt towards the end of the first half they were working awfully hard to try and press us. That was the message at half-time that just perseverance would get us there today.

“We went on, we didn’t stop playing our football. Great focus. I thought today, if we could impose our intensity and tempo on the game for 100 minutes we’d be hard to stop. It’s not easy, especially away from home, but I thought we handled ourselves really well.”

On the path ahead for Spurs now, Postecoglou said: “It means we’re one game closer, just 11 games to go. Everyone was billing this as a do-or-die for us. I assume we’re not dead yet.”
