‘Does this a lot’ – Pundit thinks he has spotted a weakness in Destiny Udogie’s game

Jamie Redknapp has criticised Destiny Udogie for his part in Nottingham Forest’s equaliser, insisting that the left-back is often not defensively switched on.

Udogie has been a revelation since arriving at Spurs last summer, taking the Premier League by storm. The left-back has impressed one and all with the way he has adapted to the demands of the inverted full-back role despite having played exclusively as a wing-back before this season.

However, the 21-year-old still has a few chinks in armour and a few weaknesses that Ange Postecoglou will want him to iron out from his game.

The youngster has made some unforced errors at times this season, having been caught on the ball in dangerous places.

Opposition players have also had joy running in behind the Italian, who occasionally tends to switch off rather than go with the winger he is marking.

Destiny Udogie needs to improve his defensive game

Udogie was arguably at fault again for Forest’s equaliser on Sunday and Redknapp suggested that this is not the first time the youngster has been caught ball-watching.

Speaking at half-time on Sky Sports (07/04/24 at 7:00 pm), the pundit said about the left-back: “I did a game a few weeks ago, the Fulham game, and he gets caught. He does this a lot. He ball-watches, Destiny Udogie.”

One has to keep in mind that Udogie is still extremely young and inexperienced. It is to be expected that he would make mistakes like this and his defensive awareness will undoubtedly improve as he plays more games at the highest level.
