‘Don’t know what he is’ – Carragher is not convinced by rumoured Spurs target

Jamie Carragher has admitted that he does not understand why some top clubs are after rumoured Tottenham target Amadou Onana, opining that the midfielder has not really set the world alight at Goodison Park.

Onana arrived at Everton with a big reputation from Lille nearly two years ago and the midfielder has been a fixture in Sean Dyche’s midfield this season, delivering solid and tireless displays.

The 22-year-old is now being backed to make a big move this summer, with Tottenham being mooted as one of the potential destinations for the Belgian.

Spurs’ interest in the midfielder was leaked a little over a week ago by Paul O’Keefe, who asserted that the Everton star is one of the options on the club’s wishlist.

It has since been suggested by Sport that the former Lille man is valued at €70m (£60.3m), with Chelsea and Barcelona also said to be plotting moves for him.

Jamie Carragher is not convinced by Amadou Onana

When asked about the speculation over Onana’s future, Carragher told Sky Sports (as relayed by Football 365): “I must say this: Onana is a player who Everton may have to sell with the situation that they find themselves in financially. He came in with a huge reputation.

“Frank Lampard brought him in, he looked the part; did really well, I think, for Belgium at Wembley; and there was talk of him going to other big clubs.

“[But] I don’t see it. I haven’t since he’s been there. I don’t know what he is. Is he a holding midfield player? Does he get forward? Does he get involved? “The only thing I have seen him do is try to lift the crowd, that is all I ever see him do when he plays for Everton.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I get where Carragher is coming from and one can argue that Onana has not done anywhere near enough to warrant a £60m price tag.

However, some players can tend to thrive in certain systems better than others and perhaps the 22-year-old would be able to take his game to the next level if he is surrounded by better players.
