‘Don’t think he’s a very good player’ – Pundit urges club not to sign Spurs man

Former Ajax man Kenneth Perez has urged the Dutch giants not to push ahead with a move for Tottenham winger Steven Bergwijn.

According to reports, Tottenham are keen on cashing in on Bergwijn this month, with several clubs from across the continent thought to be showing interest in the wide man.

Ajax have been credited with a desire to bring the wide man back to the Eredivisie, with the club’s £15m offer thought to have been turned down by Spurs.

It has emerged over recent days that the reigning Eredivisie champions are now set to launch a second offer of around £20m for the former PSV Eindhoven man.

According to 90 min, Ajax are facing competition from Newcastle United for the winger, with the Magpies alleged to be keen on signing the Tottenham man on loan until the end of the season.

Perez has now asked Ajax not to pay big money to bring Bergwijn to the Johan Cruyff Arena, claiming that the 24-year-old is not the type of player to take the club to the next level.

The former Denmark international told ESPN’s Voetbal Talk (as translated by Voetbal Primeur): “I don’t think he’s a very good player.

“I don’t know whether Ajax can really do anything with him. The positions where he can play have more or less already been occupied.”

“If you have a supporting role at Tottenham, which given his qualities is understandable, then do you want to play a bigger role at your next club?

“Maybe (he could sign) because Antony may be sold, but Bergwijn is a completely different player.

“But I’m not the one who talks about that at Ajax. I don’t see him as a player who can take you a lot further. Fortunately for Bergwijn, they think differently at Ajax.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Bergwijn has proven himself in the Eredivisie already and it is worth remembering that his numbers were extremely impressive at PSV. While he has not quite lived up to his potential at Spurs, I still believe there is a very good player in there. I have no doubts that he will succeed at Ajax should he complete a move to Amsterdam.
