‘Don’t want to disappear’ – Defender hints at potential Tottenham exit

Davinson Sanchez has told the Evening Standard that he may have to consider leaving Tottenham Hotspur if he doesn’t get more game time soon, since he fears the amount of time he’s spending on the bench will impact his career.

The Colombian joined Tottenham from Ajax in 2017 for a then-record fee of around £42 million (Guardian). Sanchez has racked up 196 appearances for the club since then, scoring five goals and providing one assist during his time in North London (Transfermarkt).

Sanchez has found his opportunities with the first team limited since Antonio Conte’s arrival, and has fallen down the pecking order behind Cristian Romero in the right-sided centre-back area.

The 26-year-old has made just 15 appearances this season (Transfermarkt), with many of those coming from the bench. Sanchez did captain the side on Saturday evening in the FA Cup against Preston North End, though.

It was reported last week that French side Nice had made an enquiry regarding the availability of Sanchez, but apparently, the player insisted he was reluctant to leave Spurs (Daily Mail).

That sentiment may not last, though, as it sounds like Sanchez is growing impatient with his lack of football.

He said: “Definitely [it has been a frustrating period]. As a player, especially at my age and knowing that I’m very capable to play in this team, I think when no game time comes it’s very hard. You’re an international player as well, and looking at that situation. You don’t want to disappear out of football.

“But I’m still here, I’m still competitive and I’m still showing I’m ready to play. If the manager says I deserve it, I will. If not, I’ll wait for my moment and then maybe there’s a decision to take. I have to show that I’m professional enough to face this situation.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I can’t see Davinson Sanchez remaining with Spurs beyond the summer. All reports suggest we are looking to add two centre-backs to our squad, which will only push Sanchez further away from first-team opportunities, and he will not want that. He should be sold in the summer, for the benefit of all parties.
