‘Early stages’ – Fabrizio Romano club are keen to take 26-year-old off Spurs’ hands

Real Sociedad have emerged as a suitor for Tottenham Hotspur’s Sergio Reguilón this summer, with negotiations over a deal thought to be in the early stages.

The left-back, signed from Real Madrid back in 2020 had found himself out of favour at Spurs over the last year having been frozen out under former boss Antonio Conte.

The Spaniard spent the 2022/23 campaign on loan at Atletico Madrid, but injury issues meant Reguilón could only turn out for the La Liga side on 12 occasions, amassing just 317 minutes of game time (Transfermarkt).

With his loan spell now over, Reguilón is now back in North London. Or, more specifically, the 26-year-old has been with the rest of the Spurs squad on their Asia-Pacific pre-season tour as part of the  preparation for the new campaign.

Tottenham boss, Ange Postecoglou has been assessing a large volume of his playing squad and has given Reguilón a chance on the pitch in the two games so far. However, it is widely believed he will not remain at the club beyond this summer (The Athletic).

Real Sociedad want Sergio Reguilón

If Reguilón is to be moved on during the current transfer window, there is a good chance he will end up back in La Liga, this time with Real Sociedad.

That is according to Fabrizio Romano, who provided an update on the Spurs defender on Twitter, suggesting there could be a switch to Spain on the horizon for Reguilón.

He wrote: “Real Sociedad have genuine interest in Sergio Reguilón, he’s one of the options as new left back. Deal not advanced yet with Tottenham — early stages, as of now.”

Spurs Web Opinion

A move to Spain just makes sense for Reguilón. He can have a fresh start in his home nation and hopefully rebuild his reputation a little bit.

He is definitely surplus to requirements at Spurs and we should move him on as soon as possible so we can use the funds to add new players to the squad.

He still has defensive frailties to his game as witnessed with his defending which led to West Ham scoring in the match in Perth, instead, Destiny Udogie needs to be given the chance to make the left-back slot his own.
