EFL club director admits Spurs have been watching their player for ‘a long time’

Peterborough United chairman Barry Fry has named Tottenham Hotspur as one of the leading contenders to snap up defender Ronnie Edwards this summer.

Edwards has won a fair few admirers since breaking into Peterborough’s starting lineup last season. The centre-back has been a mainstay in the Posh backline, with 29 appearances in the Championship so far this season (Transfermarkt).

Football Insider were the first to report on Tottenham’s interest in the 19-year-old last year, revealing that the North London club had sent scouts to run the rule over the youngster.

The same publication claimed last week that Spurs have been impressed by the defender’s progress this season and are ready to step up their pursuit of the player ahead of the summer transfer window.

Fry has now confirmed that the Lilywhites hold an interest in Fry along with an unnamed German club.

The Peterborough chairman insisted the centre-back could fetch an even higher fee than Ivan Toney, who the Posh sold to Brentford for a club-record £10m in 2020 (Sky Sports).

Fry told Peterborough Today about Edwards: “That record (fee for Toney) would be smashed if we were to sell Ronnie.

“There was plenty of interest in him before he started playing regularly in the Championship and that interest will only grow further when he plays for England in the summer.

“Spurs have been watching him for a long time, but so have other clubs. There is a big German club showing interest which is no real surprise as they love to take young English players and develop them.

“I’m not saying he will be sold as we haven’t had our planning meetings for next season yet, but, if he was to leave, ideally he’d go and be loaned straight back to us for a year.

“Nothing is likely to happen anyway until Ronnie comes back from his tournament this summer.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Fry’s statement has to be taken with a pinch of salt as he might be trying to stoke up interest in Edwards in order for Peterborough to maximise their most sellable asset in the transfer window. Just because Spurs have been scouting the 19-year-old does not necessarily mean that the club are going to launch an offer for him.
