Antonio Conte has labelled the racist abuse levelled at Richarlison this week as ’embarrassing’, claiming that those responsible should be banned for the rest of their lives.
While on duty for Brazil this week against Tunisia, Richarlison netted yet another international goal and celebrated in front of the Paris crowd, only to have a banana thrown at him.
The Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) published a statement on the matter, confirming the incident had occurred. Richarlison himself also made a statement on Twitter, claiming that things would not change unless punishments were handed out.
Tottenham also posted a message of support for Richarlison on social media, while FIFA ensured fans that an investigation would be launched into the incident.
Asked to comment on the situation today, Conte revealed he wanted to focus on Richarlison’s achievements in scoring more goals for Brazil, but those responsible for the racist abuse had to be banned and punished.
He said (Football London): “I think we have to take the good part of the situation. Richy played with the national team, scored goals and then what happened is incredible because in 2022 to witness this type of situation is embarrassing for everybody.
“For sure I hope these people are banned from football for the rest of their lives. Then it’s a very disappointing situation to have to make a comment on this. I want to take the best part of the game from Richy. He scored goals and he enjoyed playing with Brazil.”

The fact that this happens so often in the modern game is disgusting. The fact that I am never surprised to see it is just sad. Unfortunately, the longer those in charge do not hand out severe punishments, the longer it will go on.
