Eric Dier receives three gifts from Sporting Lisbon after CL return this week

Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier may have been on the losing side when his team took on Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League on Tuesday evening, but at least he came away with a few special gifts from his former club.

Spurs travelled to Portugal for the second group game of this year’s Champions League, taking on Group D leaders Sporting Lisbon. Both clubs won their opening game, making this fixture all the more important.

Despite holding tight and looking likely to take a point away from home, Spurs collapsed in the closing moments and eventually lost 2-0.

While the result was disappointing, the experience will have been a bittersweet one for Eric Dier in particular. Dier came through the ranks at Sporting Lisbon in the early days of his career, making 32 appearances for the Portuguese side (Transfermarkt).

Since joining Spurs in 2014, Dier has established himself as one of the most important players at the North London club. He has now played 327 games for Spurs over the years (Transfermarkt), and is a crucial part of Antonio Conte’s system.

Clearly, the Sporting Lisbon hierarchy still hold Eric Dier in the highest esteem all these years later, and they decided to gift the England defender a few keepsakes to remember their reunion more fondly.

The Sporting Lisbon Twitter account shared a video of Dier receiving some framed artwork of himself in Sporting colours, a Sporting Lisbon shirt, and a hooded sweatshirt with the words ‘Chefe de Dier’ on the back – translated roughly as ‘The Boss Dier’.

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s nice to see Eric Dier get such a warm welcome on his return to Sporting Lisbon, to mark what must have been such a special occasion for him. Dier spent his formative years over in Portugal and obviously owes so much to the people who helped him develop there. Let’s just hope he doesn’t actually wear that Sporting shirt!
