‘Every player next to me’ – Son reveals what Spurs teammates told him during Golden Boot race

Heung-min Son has revealed his Tottenham teammates were constantly urging him on in the race for the Golden Boot during the club’s final game of the season at Norwich.

Spurs went into the encounter at Carrow Road needing a solitary point to confirm fourth in the table and Champions League, while Son trailed Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah by one goal.

Antonio Conte’s men cruised to a 5-0 victory against the Canaries and the South Korean forward scored twice in the rout to bring his tally for the season to 23.

Meanwhile, at Liverpool, Salah came off the bench to put his side in the lead against Wolves to match Son’s amount which ensured the top scorer prize was shared (BBC Sport).

However, Son’s final day push was not plain sailing for him as he was denied by Tim Krul at close range before the goalkeeper saved again when he was sent in clear on goal.

And although he secured the award with an expertly dispatched finish and a stunning curling effort, he recalls how his Spurs colleagues were willing him to keep plugging away.

Son told Tottenham’s official website: “Before I scored, I missed a big chance as well, a one-v-one situation, but I still believed it, to be honest.

“Everyone was pushing me. If I was on my own, I couldn’t make it, but everyone next to me was pushing me – Lucas when he came on, Stevie, Eric, H, Ben, every player next to me said, ‘Sonny, you’re going to do this, believe it, you’ll get another chance’, and then I scored, then when I scored the second goal, it was incredible.

“Today, I missed the easiest chances and scored the toughest! I’m really grateful for the team. They helped me a lot, especially all season, but today, at 3-0, everyone was like, ‘Come on Sonny, you deserve this’. I really appreciated that.

“It feels amazing. When I saw it for the first time, I was quite emotional. When I was a kid, I dreamt of this. It’s incredible to have this award, literally, in my hands.”

At points throughout the match, it looked as though it wasn’t going to be Son’s day as he was denied twice with chances he would usually put away.

But he kept going, with support from his teammates, and added a further two to his tally, doing so in really excellent fashion.
