‘Everyone is a bit scared’ – Conte reveals how many have now tested positive at Spurs

Head coach Antonio Conte has been meeting with the media this afternoon ahead of tomorrow night’s Europa Conference League match against Rennes.

The Italian has been speaking for the first time about the COVID outbreak which has hit the North London club over the past few days.

The press conference was held solely over the Zoom conferencing platform, whereas in recent weeks journalists had been able to attend the Hotspur Way training facility in person.

Conte has revealed that eight players and five staff members have returned a positive test for COVID at this moment in time, but the number has been growing by the day.

With the virus seemingly spreading around Hotspur Way, the head coach claimed everyone was a bit scared at the moment as they all have families. Conte did add that the team trained today, but then recorded an extra two positive cases afterwards.

It remains to be seen whether the Premier League match against Brighton on Sunday will go ahead as Spurs continue to prepare for a depleted Thursday night in Europe.

Conte said (Football London): “Eight players and five members of staff but the problem is that every day we’re having people with Covid, people that yesterday weren’t positive and today are and we’re continuing to have contact with. It’s a serious problem.

“Today another player and another member of staff positive. Tomorrow, who? Me? Another member of staff? I want to speak about football. This is not a good thing for you, the fans and staff.

“Everyone is a bit scared, we all have families. I ask why? Why? Yesterday we trained and two positives, today we trained and after another two positives. Who next? It’s not right, we’re going home to our families.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

I know we all want to see the football and postponed games are not ideal, but the safety of the players, staff and their families have to come first. To be honest, it is reckless for Spurs to have to continue training and play a European game. Hotspur Way should be shut down for 10 days.
