As the season draws to a close, Tottenham Hotspur boss, Ange Postecoglou, has reflected on the ups and downs of his first year with the club and picked out two of his defenders as exemplary members of his squad.
Postecoglou arrived at Spurs last summer and brought with him an exciting and radically different style of football. It’s one that relies on a front-foot approach, and the system encourages defenders to roam forward, but this can also lead to risks at the back, too.
Indeed, the Lilywhites have been called out a number of times for the high line they play and the way they leave themselves open to counterattacks. Still, Postecoglou has refused to back down and insists his players continue to adopt his style of play.
Romero and van de Ven have excelled this season
By and large, Spurs have come out of this season in a much brighter place than they were at the end of the last campaign. And, despite some tough times of late, Postecoglou is happy with the way his central defenders, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, have performed.
In his latest press conference, Postecoglou said: “It’s part of our evolution and I think that great thing for us particularly through this tough spell, for me it’s great because I see how people react to it. There’s certain individuals who have really gritted their teeth and wanted to change the course of events and not just accept it.
“Probably because of the nature of where we are as a team at the moment it has been the defenders, Pedro scored an unbelievable goal at the weekend. I loved seeing that.
“I have loved seeing the growth of Micky and Romero and others, who you would never see unless you went through tough times and I think that’s important. It’s one of those things you know if you can tap into it moving forward, those guys are showing the way to change that course of events.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have been our two best players this season, which says a lot when you consider we are an attacking team. They’ve been brilliant together at the back, they’ve contributed going forward, and they have given everything to the side, too.
