Ex-Ajax man urges current midfielder to pick Spurs or Chelsea over Madrid and Barca

Former Ajax winger, Jesper Gronkaer, believes that rumoured Spurs target Donny van de Beek would be a better fit for the Lilywhites than the likes of Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Van de Beek has been in outstanding form for the Eredivisie giants for the last three seasons.

However, while the likes of Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt secured big moves last summer, the 23-year-old ended up staying at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Spurs were not only linked with the midfielder last summer (AS) but he was also said to be one of the options the North Londoners were looking at as a possible replacement for Christian Eriksen in January (Football.London).

Van de Beek’s agent, Guido Albers, has confirmed that there is plenty of interest in the Ajax star’s services this summer (Voetbal International via Goal).

Gronkaer, who spent four seasons at Chelsea, urged the Dutch international to either link up with the Blues or move to Tottenham.

Speaking to Goal, the Dane said: “I wouldn’t be surprised to see him at Real Madrid or Barcelona but I would rather see him at a club just below that. For his style of play alone, clubs like Tottenham or Chelsea would be a better fit.

Gronkaer compared the Ajax midfielder’s characteristics to that of Chelsea manager Frank Lampard. He added: “They (Spurs and Chelsea) are still top clubs and he is more like Frank Lampard, that kind of player.

“He is a big guy, box-to-box and takes good long shots, but he is not as technically gifted as other players that have come from Ajax. He is a player you can always get a certain level from.”

I agree that Van de Beek’s style of play makes him well suited for the Premier League. In fact, he also has the work rate and tactical discipline that Jose likes in players. However, I just don’t think he is what we need this summer, as we are fairly well stocked when it comes to offensive-minded midfielders.
