Ex-Arsenal captain compares Harry Kane to a legendary Dutch striker

Tony Adams has told Stadium Astro that star striker Harry Kane has close ‘similarities’ to Dutch legend and three-time Ballon d’Or winner, Marco Van Basten.

The England captain netted a brace against Ukraine and almost produced a Van Basten-esque moment when his outrageous left-footed volley was just tipped just over the bar.

Arsenal legend Adams explained how Van Basten was the best player he ever faced in his career, while admitting that there are similarities between the two, even if Kane hasn’t reached those heights quite yet.

Van Basten scored 277 goals in 373 games across his career, as well as recording 82 assists (TransferMarkt). So far, Harry Kane has 237 senior goals in 401 matches, including 53 assists (TransferMarkt).

However, while Van Basten’s trophy cabinet is full of silverware from the Netherlands and Italy, Harry Kane is yet to win his first senior trophy.

Adams said: “Van Basten, the best player I ever played against. He was an incredible number nine.

“I don’t put Harry up there just yet with Van Basten but there are similarities. I think Van Basten was a little bit quicker.

“But certainly, Harry’s got technical ability and he has had good control. He can hold up the ball. He gets in the box. Good awareness. Pulls off strikers.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Harry Kane’s legacy in the game is often questioned, just where will be ranked despite never winning a major trophy?

Comparisons like this emphasise the point that a player of Kane’s standard should be playing at the top level.

Comparisons to great strikers like this — especially from an Arsenal man like Adams — could be too early. But Kane, at the end of his career, will want to be in this bracket of legend.
