Ex-Arsenal player unsure if 27-year-old would improve Spurs amid transfer speculation

Former Arsenal player Stewart Robson has admitted he is unsure whether Clement Lenglet would improve Tottenham and claims the Barcelona defender has struggled over the last two seasons.

Spurs have been among the busiest clubs in the transfer market so far, adding four new players to Antonio Conte’s squad ahead of the new campaign.

Their most recent move for Richarlison from Everton saw him join Yves Bissouma, Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster, who all arrived earlier in the window.

But Spurs are looking to continue building with Lenglet, 27, looking set to be the next addition as he is on the verge of completing a loan switch to north London (Fabrizio Romano).

The France international defender had a tough season with the Blaugrana starting just seven games in LaLiga (Transfermarkt) as he slipped down the pecking order under Xavi.

And as such, Robson is not convinced Lenglet would be the right player to improve Tottenham defensively having seen his confidence shatter over recent campaigns.

He told ESPN: “There is talk of Lenglet going to Spurs, to play in that back three. I am not sure. That Lenglet over the last couple of years at Barcelona hasn’t looked like a top-class player.

“I don’t think he is going to improve Spurs if he does go there.”

Lenglet has had a tough last couple of seasons at Barcelona but we have to remember that he played well when he first arrived and back to his time at Sevilla.

A change of scenery could be the best for him and someone like Conte is an ideal manager to try and extract the best out of him again.
