Ex-chairman tips Spurs to sign prolific forward to give ‘a chance’ of winning Premier League title

Former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan believes that Tottenham Hotspur should look to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney to look to increase their chances of challenging for the Premier League title.

Spurs have the opportunity to move back to the top of the table later this evening when they take on Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and can open up a two-point gap on current champions Manchester City.

The departure of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich earlier this summer saw Tottenham have to look elsewhere to fill the gap of the 30 goals that the forward scored for the North Londoners in the top flight last season, however, Heung-min Son has stepped up to rediscover some of his old form to already have bagged eight goals and only needs two more to equal his tally in the previous season.

Sky Sports reported last week that Brentford value the Toney at £100million and fully intend to keep him at the club until the end of the season and will still have 18 months to run on his current deal by the time the transfer window opens in January.

Is Ivan Toney Spurs’ answer to a replacement for Harry Kane?

Jordan has disagreed with such a high valuation for the 27-year-old and instead believes that a fee of around £70million would certainly tempt a potential suitor to try to tempt Brentford’s resolve in parting company with the forward, who finishes his eight-month ban for betting offences on January 16.

“He’s a very good player,” Jordan told talkSPORT. “Again, I watched the observation of him coming from the Championship ‘Oh, he is unorthodox’.

“No, he is effective. He is an effective good centre-forward who actually understands football. He has got a football brain. He has got the ability. So, when he went into the Premier League. I wasn’t surprised at what he did.

“I don’t think he guarantees everyone a title. But what he does is that he gives everybody a chance – I think he is a very good signing for any of the top six clubs. If I was Tottenham Hotspur, I would see if I could sign Ivan Toney and push that envelope.

“I think he would do a job for anybody. I don’t think he is an £80-90 million centre-forward. But I think somebody would pay £70 million for him.”

Richarlison has struggled to find the back of the net to help shoulder the responsibility of the goalscoring and it could lead to Tottenham to look elsewhere in January if they are still in touching distance of a title tilt.

Any interest that Tottenham have in Toney could see them priced out of the race due to a potential bidding war with the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal also keen on his services and historically are prepared to pay higher transfer fees and wages (Sky Sports).
