Ex-Chelsea man claims he would take these Sheffield United players over Tottenham’s

Tottenham’s performances and results have been relatively mixed since the Premier League restart and Jose Mourinho has come under some pressure over the past weeks.

The victory in the North London Derby certainly bought the Spurs boss some goodwill and time among the fan base but it is clear that there is still work to be done.

One area in which there has undeniably been a major improvement since the restart is in defence, with the likes of Eric Dier and Toby Alderweireld.

Barring the Sheffield United game, where Tottenham’s defenders had a bit of a nightmare, the backline has held firm and Spurs have rarely conceded big chances.

In fact, baring the loss to the Blades, Alexandre Lacazette’s wondergoal for Arsenal on Sunday is the only strike Mourinho’s men have conceded in open play since the restart.

However, Tony Cascarino remains unimpressed with the Spurs backline, claiming that he would take Sheffield United’s defence over Tottenham’s or Chelsea’s.

Speaking to talkSPORT’s Weekend Sports Breakfast, Cascarino said: “They [Sheffield United] have played Tottenham and they have played Chelsea, okay. Two clubs who have invested a lot of money in recent years.

“I’d have Sheffield United’s back-five over Tottenham’s back-four and I’d take all of Sheffield United’s defenders over Chelsea’s defenders.

“I think Chris Basham came from Blackpool, they had a defender come from [MK Dons], a couple of free transfers in there a £4million buy – John Egan from Brentford. Their backline has been constructed out of about £4m.

“Everyone of them, naturally, including Jack O’Connell, knows how to defend.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I have been extremely impressed with Sheffield United both from a defensive and an offensive standpoint this season. Their defenders all seem capable of winning challenges while also being tactically astute and being good with the ball at their feet. However, their solidity does not come from having superstar defenders but because Chris Wilder’s system affords them a lot of protection. Player for player, we have the superior defenders. I am confident that with time, Jose will make us one of the best defensive outfits in the league.
