Tottenham Hotspur have left a lot to be desired this season in all competitions, as they currently sit ninth in the Premier League, joint bottom of their Champions League group, and out of the Carabao Cup.
While four or five years ago Tottenham and Pochettino had a young and hungry side eager to win trophies and make waves in Europe, the projects seems to have fallen stale.
Three of the key Spurs contingent since Pochettino’s arrival, Jan Vertonghen, Christian Eriksen, and Toby Alderweireld are all out of contract at the end of the season.
Ex-Chelsea striker, Toby Cascarino, has now named four Spurs stars who have declined in recent times. He says that Dele has been missing for a year, Danny Rose has lost pace and defensive ability, and errors have crept into the games of Toby and Jan.
Spurs will need to regain some kind of form and quick if they are to secure a top-four spot this season and Champions League football for another year.
Cascarino said (Times): “The problem is that too many players are not as good as they were 18 months ago. Where has Dele Alli been for the past year or so? Danny Rose is not quite as good defensively and not as quick.
“Too many errors are creeping into Jan Vertonghen and [Toby] Alderweireld’s performances. The lack of signings over the past few windows has led to complacency in the squad.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
As much as I hate to admit it, I have to agree with Cascarino. The Spurs side has aged and a number of the key players are now past their best. It is time for a big and painful rebuild before Tottenham slip back into the pack.
