Ex-England manager says old Spurs target should make Southgate’s squad ahead of Winks, Dier, and Alli

Tottenham Hotspur have always had a healthy contingent of England players in Gareth Southgate’s squads since he took over as national manager.

Kyle Walker, Danny Rose, Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Harry Winks, Eric Dier, and more have been regulars in the Southgate regime.

However, Eric Dier has now slipped right down the pecking order in North London and Harry Winks and Dele Alli have struggled for form in recent weeks.

With EURO 2020 fast approaching, Southgate will have to make some decisions on who he thinks should be in his final squad.

The Spurs lads have some time to make a case for themselves, but ex-England boss Sam Allardyce claims that he would not select any of them at this moment in time.

Instead, Big Sam named old Spurs target, Jack Grealish, as one of his picks, with the other five midfielders being Declan Rice, Jordan Henderson, James Maddison, Mason Mount, and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Sam said: “It’s an extremely difficult task. Some will agree and some won’t,

“Two of the nailed-ons for me would be Jordan Henderson and Declan Rice with their consistent level of performances and solid base they give a midfield for their club and for England.

“Flair players that are coming into their pretty good form at this moment in time, would be Mason Mount, I don’t think there’s any doubt about that at the moment. James Maddison for me as well.

“I think the loss of form of Jesse Lingard and the injury to Ox [Alex Oxlade Chamberlain] and the loss of Eric Dier at Tottenham, keep them out of my selection.

“I’ve gone for this lad, we talk about English players that can’t open the door in the final third, Jack Grealish is the lad for me. He oozes class in the Premier League, it’s been so long since he got there and now he’s got there, it looks like it’s not fazed him at all.”
