Ex-France international implies reported Spurs target is not ready for a big move

The Daily Mirror reported a few days ago that Tottenham are readying a massive £50m bid for Lyon forward Memphis Depay in the January transfer window.

The club have reportedly sent scouts to watch the Dutch international in action on multiple occasions this season and are said to be keen on landing him.

Depay failed to live up to his potential at Manchester United a few years ago but has resurrected his career since moving to Lyon.

However, former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf has expressed his doubts over whether Depay is good enough to return to the Premier League.

While the former French international admitted that Depay’s talent was there for all to see, he insisted that the 25-year-old doesn’t have the consistency required to be considered one of the best in the world.

When asked if the youngster was ready for a move to Spurs, Leboeuf told ESPN FC, “Frankly, I doubt it. There is talent for sure and we can see that every time he plays with the national team.

“He is very good and he shows all his strengths. But there is a lack of consistency with this player.

“When he signed for Lyon, he pretended to be one of the best players in the world and that he would play for a bigger club and he deserved to be at a bigger club. But we didn’t see that.

“Sometimes, he has good games but overall I have been disappointed with his performances.

“Again he has the talent, but what we need is like [Cristiano] Ronaldo, like [Lionel] Messi – week-in-week-out effort to make sure you are good in every game you play. And he is not at the level.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While Depay is not quite in that top bracket of attackers in European football, his talent is there for all to see and Pochettino might be the right man to get the best out of him. However, my one big concern is that Depay does seem to have a bit of an attitude problem and may not be such a great influence on the dressing room.
