Ex-Liverpool man labels experienced Spurs star as a ‘weak link’

Mark Lawrenson has claimed that current club captain Hugo Lloris is a weak link in the current Tottenham Hotspur side.

Lloris was in outstanding form for 12 months after returning from his elbow injury last year, with Jose Mourinho even labelling the Frenchman the best goalkeeper in the Premier League and suggesting that he was in the world’s top three.

However, A few errors have crept into the Tottenham captain’s game since the turn of the year. The 34-year-old has come in for a lot of criticism for some of his performances but Mourinho has continued to defend his number one.

Some recent reports have indicated that the former Lyon man, who will soon be down to the final 12 months of his contract at Tottenham, has no intention of signing a new deal and could return to Ligue 1 in the summer.

Lawrenson believes that Spurs will be better off without the experienced shot-stopper.

The pundit was quoted as saying to BBC Radio 5 Live (9:07pm, March 21, 2021): “Look at the way the goalkeeper has been over the last month. He has looked the weak link.”

Our main weak link is at centre-back rather than between the sticks. Despite the mistakes he has made, I still believe Lloris has had a good season and he has at least a couple of more years left in him at the top level.

It would be quite expensive to replace the 34-year-old with a top-quality number one and I would rather see the club spend that money on a top-quality centre-back or a right-back.
