Ex-PL referee claims PGMOL should meet with Spurs man to discuss disciplinary record

Former FIFA and Premier League referee Keith Hackett has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur should arrange for Oliver Skipp to meet with a member from the Professional Game Match Officials to discuss his disciplinary record.

Skipp has enjoyed a fantastic start to the season with Spurs after returning from his impressive loan spell at Norwich last season.

The 21-year-old looks set to establish himself as a regular in the starting eleven this season if he keeps up the same standard of performances.

However, one area in which the midfielder has struggled is his disciplinary record, with the youngster already receiving four bookings in the Premier League this season, the joint-highest of any player in the division.

This does not seem like an anomaly either, with Skipp picking up seven yellow cards at Carrow Road last season, including three in his last four games for the Canaries.

Hackett believes that a Premier League official needs to have a discussion with the Tottenham man on what he is doing wrong so that the youngster can avoid racking up the bookings in the coming weeks and months.

Hackett told Football Insider: “Well, the referees at Premier League level also referee in the Championship.

“My view would be that the manager at Tottenham should get in a referee from the PGMOL, that might be part of the management team and discuss every caution with the player and the coach.

“That’s what I did with Fellaini way back in his Everton days with David Moyes who had 10 quick yellow cards. David Moyes and I spoke about it and we both wanted to avoid yellow cards. The outcome was a positive one, generally.

“That’s what Tottenham should do. He’s 21, in football terms, he’s mature. One assumes, needs to develop his skillset and stay in control, I suppose.”

Skipp is still very much a rough diamond who is continuing to polish his game. So, one would not want him to coach the aggression out of him as that makes him the player he is.

A discussion with a PGMOL official on what he is getting wrong with some of his challenges might help the youngster avoid similar mistakes in the future.
