Ex-player explains why Troy Parrott should be given another chance immediately

Danny Mills believes that Troy Parrott needs to be handed another opportunity by Jose Mourinho so that he can bounce back quickly from his set back against Norwich City.

Mourinho has maintained that the striker isn’t ready to be a regular just yet (Evening Standard) but he handed him a rare opportunity against Norwich on Wednesday as the striker came off the bench in extra-time.

The home side failed to find the winning goal, before losing to the Canaries on penalties, with Parrott being one of three Spurs players who failed to convert from the spot.

Mills is worried that the penalty miss might play on the teenager’s mind for a long time if he doesn’t get an opportunity to put it behind him immediately.

The former Leeds defender told Football Insider: “This is a problem. A young player who has not played a lot of football misses a penalty and it is not easy. He is probably fortunate that other players missed as well. He will not, therefore, be singled out.

“It is tough because for a lot of senior players you get the chance to bounce back very quickly, another game and you can put it right and get it out of your mind.

“When is he next going to play for Tottenham’s first team? It could be a while. It is the last thing you need because we all make mistakes but you always want to put them right as quickly as possible. The worry for him is how long until he plays again.”

Moments like the one on Wednesday night can indeed break a young player’s confidence and self-belief. However, I’m sure Jose and the players would have tried their best to lift him and help him get over the penalty miss. Let’s hope he gets an opportunity to have another cameo off the bench soon and finds the back of the net.
