Ex-Spurs boss thinks one winger could play deeper in midfield for Conte

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood has highlighted Dejan Kulusevski as the kind of player who could adapt to a midfield role, due to his exceptional range of passing.

Kulusevski joined Spurs in January 2022 and has made quite the impact since. He managed five goals and assists in just 18 appearances last season (Transfermarkt).

The Swedish winger already has one goal and three assists this term in his first nine appearances (Transfermarkt) and has forged an incredible relationship with fellow Spurs attackers Harry Kane and Heung-min Son very quickly.

While Kulusevski poses a goal threat himself, it is his ability to find a teammate with a killer pass and the number of chances he creates that has earned him most of his plaudits.

On multiple occasions this season, Kulusevski has changed the game for Spurs with his attacking runs and impeccable vision. It’s these attributes that have led former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood to envisage a future for the youngster in a midfield role.

Sherwood told Premier League Productions (17/09/22) that Kulusevski could make the transition to playing in the middle of the park if called upon by Antonio Conte.

He said: “I would love to see him do that (play all four of Son, Kane, Richarlison and Kulusevski).

“I think Kulusevski could be the one who could play deeper. I think he has the workrate. I think he has the attitude. He certainly has the range of passing that would suit a midfield player. So, I think there are ways he could tinker with the system.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I can see Kulusevski working in a central midfield role for sure. He’s young and adaptable, and certainly has the right mentality to come in and do a job for the team in whatever way Antonio Conte would ask of him. His passing and decision-making is phenomenal and would serve him well in such a role.
