Ex-Spurs defender identifies 25-year-old as player the club ‘have missed for years’

Former Tottenham defender, Alan Hutton believes that Tottenham have been crying out for a player with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s attributes for years and lavished praise on the midfielder.

Hojbjerg was by no means the most exciting of the seven arrivals that walked through the door in N17 during the summer transfer window but the midfielder has quickly become a mainstay in the Tottenham side.

One could even argue that the Dane is one of Tottenham’s most important players at the moment, comparable with Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, as Jose Mourinho’s men lack another player in the squad who possesses similar attributes to former Southampton man.

Hutton not only raved about Hojbjerg’s ability to shield the back four but also hailed his leadership qualities on the pitch.

The pundit told Football Insider: “I’ll even say he’s been their best signing, there you go, and that’s them bringing Bale in and everything. I think he has been the part that they have missed for years.

“That steeliness, that player that keeps it simple but it’s not just sideways, it’s not just that type of guy. He seems like he’s in there, he’s a talker, he’s a leader, he could be captain I think. He’s been a revelation for them and they’ve really missed that type of player.”

The former Spurs right-back admitted that he liked the balance that a midfield three of Hojbjerg, Moussa Sissoko and Tanguy Ndombele provide the side.

Hutton added: “Now he’s nailed on, it’s him and somebody else and I think him and Sissoko make a great partnership which allows the forward four, even Ndombele in that number 10 position, to kind of go and be a free spirit if you want.

“Go and do your thing, win us the game, we will make sure everything’s solid at the back and you go win us the game, so it’s a great blend.”
