Ex-Spurs man claims ‘it would help’ to offload Tanguy Ndombele this summer in swap deal

Darren Bent believes it will be in Tottenham’s best interest to accept Barcelona’s rumoured offer of Samuel Umtiti and Nelson Semedo in a swap deal to sign Tanguy Ndombele.

Ndombele’s relationship with Jose Mourinho is said to be strained and the midfielder is reportedly looking to leave Spurs after just one season in North London (L’Equipe).

Sky Sports reported on Friday that Barcelona had offered Samuel Umtiti and Nelson Semedo in a swap deal to take the Frenchman to the Camp Nou.

However, multiple reports, including one in the Mirror and another from Football.London, have suggested that Tottenham have no intention of letting the midfielder leave the club this summer as Mourinho is committed to helping him reach his best level.

Bent feels that it would be wise of Spurs to consider the offer as Umtiti and Semedo would both help to fill gaps in their squad.

When asked about the Catalan giants’ offer, the former Tottenham striker told Football Insider: “To be fair, that swap deal would cover up a lot of cracks and I think it would help.

“Centre-half, they’ve been a little bit week this season and at full-back as well, they’ve been a little bit suspect. Tanganga’s done very, very well but he’s still quite young.

“Semedo a couple of years ago was absolutely brilliant for Benfica, absolutely brilliant. Went to Barcelona, struggled a little bit but that covers it.

“Umtiti as well, a World Cup winner of course! If you’re getting Umtiti and Semedo, you ain’t having to buy these players and that’s two positions kind of sewn up.”

I am not convinced that Semedo would be much of an upgrade on Serge Aurier. Umtiti would certainly help to improve our backline but his injury record doesn’t inspire much confidence. All in all, we should ideally give Ndombele at least until next January to prove that he can turn his Spurs career around.
